Choose from more than 300 candidate sites

Fast's site selection requirements are particularly strict, to find a natural pit that can put down the large reflective surface, but also to meet the many requirements of fast construction.The place to build this radio telescope requires a valley that is hundreds of meters large and surrounded by four-sided mountains, and the mountain also blocks the electromagnetic waves outside.

In order to find a position that can meet the construction conditions, since 1994, the national Tiantai experts have used remote sensing and other technologies to select suitable areas across the country, and have visited the southwest and other regions many times.With more than 300 satellite remote sensing maps, Nan Rendong has set foot in almost all the mines in the southwest mountains, and some deserted mountains and mountains have no roads.

In the end, Nan Rendong chose the karst pothole in Jinke Village, Pingtang County, Guizhou Province.This pothole is just enough to hold a fast giant reflection surface of almost 30 football fields.There is no township within a radius of 5 kilometers, about 85 kilometers from Pingtang County and about 45 kilometers from Luodian County, which is suitable for the radio environment required by fast.
